News Bulletin: corebloodbrothers, State of the Region, Looming Imperium Invasion

Since the departure of Northern Coalition(dot) [NC] from the area, things have calmed down in the Providence region. Thus, not much has transpired during the passing week, giving Providence pilots a much needed breather after nearly two months of constant fighting. The things that did happen, were either unimportant enough to merit their own post or were already covered by other major news outlets.

The EVE Scribe has gathered all of the events into one news bulletin to keep the pilots of Providence up to date with the occurrences in the region.

corebloodbrothers Resigns his Seat on CSM X

In a move that surprised all, corebloodbrothers announced his resignation from the Council of Stellar Management 10, also known as CSM X. corebloodbrothers cited demands on his time and an inability to balance them with his work on the CSM X as the main reason for choosing to quit the council.

With his resignation, Providence Bloc loses its voice on the council, with the candidate most likely to succeed his seat being a representative of High Security space interests,Lorelei Ierendi. The full resignation letter can be found on EVE News 24.

State of the Providence Region

On the 2nd of July, the G-5EN2 system, the first system conquered by [NC] during its campaign, was finally re-claimed by Providence Bloc forces. This marked the official end of the war between the two entities, with all systems in the region once more safely in Providence Bloc’s control.

With [NC]’s departure, large scale conflicts have subsided in the region, allowing its residents to re-build and resume their peaceful activities. With Pandemic Horde [REKTD] and Spectre Fleet otherwise engaged, it seems Providence Bloc will enjoy the peace for a few more weeks at least.

Pending Imperium Invasion

Only recovering from one war, and already reports are coming in of the Imperium’s preparations to invade the region. The residents of Providence had been reporting increased Imperium activity as well as spikes in border systems, such as Esa in the Tash-Murkon region.

The system’s close proximity to the Providence region and the Amarr system in Domain which serves as an important trade hub for the South of New Eden, makes it an ideal staging area for sub-capital operations. The station in the system has historically served as the home base for several anti-Providence groups.

As the sovereignty mechanic changes, termed FozzieSov, will probably be implemented next week, bar no further delay, Providence Bloc may face a full scale invasion of its space, as Imperium forces hope to study and perfect the new system in order to protect their holdings in the future, using the region as their testing ground.

This may mean that the coming weeks may make the past two months look like a picnic in comparison. Only time will tell.

The EVE Scribe will keep you posted.

Providence Fight Club: 13.7.2014

On the 13th of July, Providence Bloc forces saw no less than five separate engagements in the span of four hours in the Catch and Providence regions, resulting in a total of one hundred and eighty-three kills and one hundred and six losses as well as twelve billion ISKs in damages.

The first engagement took place in the 9KOE-A system, Catch region, between Providence Bloc and the THE UNTHINKABLES Alliance. Providence Bloc forces, commanded by corebloodbrothers of Volition Cult, The Volition Cult Alliance, were making their way towards the V-3YG7 system in the Catch region, which serves as Brave Collective Alliance‘s main staging system. They were mainly in Battlecruiser and Cruiser class ships with armor Logistic ship support, some eighty-five pilots in total.

However, their route was blocked in the U-QVWD system, by a THE UNTHINKABLES Alliance fleet of an equal size, mostly in Ishtar class Heavy Assault Cruisers . Since THE UNTHINKABLES had the better position, jumping into them was deemed unwise, and a decision was made to retreat, hoping for the enemy force to be lured and jump into the Providence Bloc fleet, thus allowing for a decent brawl.

This was what exactly happened, when THE UNTHINKABLES force gave chase after some time, and caught up to the Providence Bloc forces in the 9KOE-A system, on the 36N-HZ gate. What unfolded was a chaotic brawl, with Providence Bloc losing seventy-five ships, but managing to inflict twenty-eight losses on THE UNTHINKABLES.

With the bulk of the fleet destroyed, it was presumed that this would be the end of Providence Bloc operations for the day, yet reports of an Affirmative(dot) Alliance Ferox class Battlecruiser gang in the F-YH5B system, Providence region, spurred members of the fleet to re-ship to Rupture class Cruisers. What followed was a one sided engagement between the thirty-five strong Ferox gang and the seventy-two pilot Rupture fleet on the 8P9-BM gate, which was won by Providence Bloc with only minor losses.

Emboldened by this engagement, Providence Bloc forces made their way back to the V-3YG7 system for a second round. Only this time, a CFC Frigate fleet, a hundred and ten strong mainly in Interceptors and Harpy class Assault ships was encountered in the B-3QPD system, Catch region. The CFC force was jumping into the system from the V-3YG7 system and was caught by the Providence Bloc forces. A brutal engagement quickly happened, with Providence Bloc forces decimating half the CFC fleet, but taking some significant losses themselves.

In the end, Providence Bloc forces prevailed and entered the V-3YG7 system, however, it seems that remnants of the CFC force decided to give chase, as a second engagement flared on the B-3QPD gate and the station in the system, resulting in more losses to the CFC forces, as well as an Almost Awesome(dot) Alliance Cormorant class Destroyer gang which got caught in the crossfire. This time Providence Bloc losses were minimal.

What should have marked the last engagement, with Providence Bloc forces happily returning to their staging system, was proven wrong, as a Cult of War Alliance Ishtar class Heavy Assault Cruiser gang, with intentions to prey upon the remnants of the Providence Bloc fleet, was sadly mistaken in their estimates, and instead encountered a still formidable fleet compared to their forces. The fighting was carried on the gates linking the U-QVWD and B-3QPD systems, with Cult of War suffering quite a few losses before abondening the field completely.

This marked the last major engagement before Providence Bloc forces returned to the staging system, reaching five engagements, with four clear victories and one defeat early on.

After a turbulent start for the summer, will this mark a return to normality for the Providence Bloc?

Providence Fight Club: T-RPFU 4.4.2014

On the fourth of April, a Providence Bloc force met its demise by the hands of The Unthinkables Alliance at the T-RPFU system, Providence region, in what marked the second battle in a series of skirmishes between the two entities.

Providence Bloc forces were organized in a Rupture class Cruiser fleet, consisting of around a hundred pilots, and led by corebloodbrothers, of Volition Cult, The Volition Cult Alliance. The force was mainly occupied with border patrol at the time, with mixed success.

During the operation, reports came of a large Unthinkables force entering the Providence region through the F9E-KX system, Catch region. The force, some eighty pilots in total, mainly in Muninn class Heavy Assault Cruisers with a sizable Logistics Cruiser support, entered the D-GTMI system in the Providence region and was reported as making its way towards the T-RPFU system.

Using the Providence region Jump Bridge network, Providence Bloc’s fleet managed to intercept the enemy fleet, reaching the T-RPFU system before it and setting to engage them on the D-GTMI gate, where it was situated.

At first, the battle seemed to be going well for the Providence Bloc, with several of The Unthinkables’ Heavy Assault Cruisers succumbing to the damage output of the Providence Bloc fleet, disregarding their Logistic Cruiser support entirely. However as the battle continued, the tide turned, with The Unthinkables being able to sustain the Providence Bloc volleys and quickly diminish them, as losses mounted on the Providence Bloc’s side.

In the end, The Providence Bloc was forced to retreat, conceding the field to The Unthinkables. Several reasons were given for the defeat, mostly centered around pilot errors. Fleet members were unable to focus fire due to the need to re-load ammunition, being further away than their guns’ range allows, or unaware of any target switches due to not setting up proper filters for the fleet broadcast system, thus being overwhelmed by useless information, and even difficulty understanding the Fleet Commander.

Though at first it seemed that at least on the ISK value alone of the destroyed ships Providence Bloc could claim some sort of victory, but as days passed and the Killboards updated, it was apparent that on that front, Providence Bloc has suffered a defeat as well. Regardless, one must ask will the Providence Bloc be forced to deal with the efficiencies uncovered by this engagement, or continue its losing streak?

News: Corporate Theft in The Volition Cult Estimated at Thirty Billion ISK in Damages

The second of April saw a theft of Corporate assets and funds from Iron Mongers, a member Corporation of The Volition Cult Alliance, a sovereignty holder in the Providence-Bloc Coalition. The theft took place around Tranquility server’s scheduled down time by Fat Elvis Presley. Amongst the stolen items was an Ark class Jump Freighter, a Rorqual class Capital Industrial ship, an unspecified Freighter with assorted modules and materials, as well as seven billion ISK taken from the corporate wallet. All told, it is believed that around thirty billion ISK was stolen.

When interviewed about the event, Fat Elvis Presley explained it was a spur of the moment, rather than a calculated thing, born out of his frustration with the Corporation, specifically the inability to bring any of his proposed projects to fruition. The money taken was part of a fund he himself started, and which he claims he was the chief contributor to. Using his other accounts, he was able to quickly move all the stolen assets out of the Providence region around down time, though he suspects his CEO became aware of his actions once he logged into the game, after the scheduled downtime. When asked whether or not he regretted his actions, Fat Elvis Presley said he did not.

xtreamer, CEO of Iron Mongers, claims the theft itself did not have any serious impact on the Corporation, but will have a lasting influence, as recruitment policies and roles need to be re-evaluated and changed. Though he understands Fat Elvis Presley’s actions, considering the Corporation itself is more oriented towards family and friends who spend less time in EVE Online and more playing together on other games, he believes the one who actually lost from the entire ordeal was Fat Elvis Presley. Trust is rare to come by in EVE Online, and the theft will possibly cost Fat Elvis Presley credibility in the future. However, xtreamer still professed to being personally hurt by Fat Elvis Presley’s actions.

corebloodbrothers, of Volition Cult, The Volition Cult Alliance, gave an official statement regarding the event, claiming that Fat Elvis Presley and his associated accounts have been set permanently KoS (Kill on Sight) by the Providence-Bloc, meaning that regardless of what Corporation or Alliance he may join, he will still be regarded as an enemy by all Providence-Bloc Coalition members.

Fat Elvis Presley has since joined TEMPLAR(dot) Corporation, Initiative Mercenaries Alliance.

Article: Doctrine Reshuffle

With the recent changes made by CCP, I sat down with corebloodbrothers to discuss the future of EVE fleet warfare

For those of you who don’t read patch notes, and until recently, this included me as well, CCP has decided to change a core mechanic in the game, namely drone assist. However, in the last few months, drone assist has been the leading fleet doctrine for many large Alliances and Coalitions, including the Providence Bloc. Thus, I decided to ask corebloodbrothers, one of Providence’s senior Fleet Commanders, about this recent change, and its effect on large fleet warfare in general, and Providence doctrines in particular.

What is drone assist?

For those of you confused, drone assist is a fleet doctrine built around the ability of fleet members to assign their drones to another pilot in the same fleet. This allows for one pilot to concentrate the entire drone damage output of the fleet, in one perfect volley when using sentry drones, who received a few upgrades to damage and tracking during the years. The assigned pilot is designated the “Drone Bunny” and is usually the Fleet Commander, giving him absolute control over the situation and eliminating much of the human error and waste in more conventional, turret based doctrines.

The volley damage itself is overwhelming with large sentry drone fleets, easily melting battleships regardless of how many logistics ships are on the field. Often times, the target isn’t even aware of its impending doom due to the “Drone Bunny” fitting a Passive Targeting Array, which does not alert pilots when they are targeted (“Yellow Boxing”).

There are no known hard counters to this doctrine, except identifying and eliminating the Fleet Commanders and “Drone Bunnies” beforehand (“Head Decapitation”), which is not always an option.

This doctrine favors mainly Gallente, and to some extent, Amarr ships, and saw the rise of the Dominix class battleship to the forefront of EVE fleet warfare after many years of neglect.

Is drone assist dead?

For those of you who invested skill points in drones, corebloodbrothers has a reassuring message. Drone assist, in Providence at least, is not dead. The change only limited the amount of drones assigned to one player, creating a “cap” of fifty drones per assigned character. This allows for a squadron to assign its drones to its squad leader, increasing the number of “Drone Bunnies” to one per ten members in fleet, making squad leaders have an actual function in fleets besides augmenting wing commander boosts.

In theory, with multiple “Drone Bunnies”, the damage output on the field is still considerable, but also far more flexible, allowing quick target switching and overwhelming logistics ships, as damage spread on multiple ships is also possible now. It also decreases the effectiveness of the “Head Decapitation” counter, as there is a need to identify a larger number of “Drone Bunnies”, and the likelihood of removing all of them from the field at the start of a battle is far smaller.

Of course, in practice so far, this new method has yielded mixed results. corebloodbrothers admits that it will take some time for Fleet Commanders to get accustomed to the change, and for a pool of skilled squad leaders to form. However, he remains optimistic.

The final days of the “Slowcat”?

The “Slowcat” is the name given to a specific fit of the Amarrian carrier – The Archon. “Slowcats” are heavily tanked Archons who use sentry drones for damage and remote repair and transfer capacitor between one another, creating what is called “Spider Tanking”. Though their damage is anemic compared to battleships such as the Gallente Dominix or the Amarrian Armageddon, their unique properties allow them to fit more sets of drones, assuring they can shrug off the loss of drones by bombing runs and the like. Up until recently, “Slowcat” fleets were considered invincible, able to withstand attacks by numerically superior sub-capital fleets, even at four-to-one odds.

For those hoping that the patch will remove the “Slowcat” fleet doctrine from the battlefield, bitter disappointment awaits. Though the “Slowcats'” fitting will require a bit of tuning, to accommodate the need for Archon pilots to lock targets individually, the basic doctrine is still mostly intact. The only major change is the need for “Slowcat” pilots to manage their drones and targets during battles, a task which was at solely the Fleet Commander’s before the patch.

What did become unfeasible after the patch, was the introduction of the “Slowmera”, a variation of the “Slowcat” based on the shield tanking Caldari carrier – The Chimera. Pandemic Legion experimented with the concept shortly before the patch, but with the need to fit Sensor Boosters and ECCM modules to negate electronic warfare, Chimeras will be forced to sacrifice their tank in order to apply damage on the field, negating their effectiveness compared to the Archon itself.

What does the future hold?

According to corebloodbrothers, we will be seeing soon a return to a more turret based fleet warfare, as has already been witnessed in the last few days. The ship that will make its biggest return to the battlefields of EVE, is the Amarrian Heavy Assault Cruiser – The Zealot. Already successfully operated by Razor Alliance of the CFC and Black Legion, the Zealot combines speed, tank and damage in one small mobile hull.

Northern CoalitionDot has lately adopted the Navy Issue Apocalypse, an Amarrian battleship, along their Proteus doctrine in their fleets.

The RUS Coalition has made a wide use of the Minmatar battleship, the Typhoon, while other CFC entities that have deployed to the Catch region continued to rely on the Tengu and Harpy as their main combat ships.

H.E.R.O Coalition continues to heavily use the Megathron class battleship as their main combat ship, along an increase in the use of the Thorax class cruiser.

The Tengu and the Caracal will remain the ships of choice for kitting fleets, while the Cerberus, the Tech II variant of the Caracal, might see greater use as a counter to said fleets.

The Dominix and Armageddon, though less powerful than before, still maintain considerable prowess in large fleet engagements, especially against capital ships, when they are Heavy Neutralizer fitted. While the Rokh will continue be the ship of choice for sniping fleets.

Dark clouds on the horizon

While the patch seems to have done much to increase the variety in New Eden, there is still one ship class that, according to corebloodbrothers, has become detrimental to PvP, specifically large scale one, the interceptor.

With its ability to ignore bubbles, great agility and fast warp speed, the interceptor is able to quickly gather intelligence on the enemy and escape, allowing fleets to easily bypass gate camps and hostile defense fleets, decreasing the probability of two fleets engaging each other.

Not only that, more and more roaming gangs have adopted the interceptor as their ship of choice, decreasing the ability of counter fleets to form and intercept them in time. More combat pilots prefer to remain docked rather than engage in a futile chase that most likely will end with them empty handed.

CCP has acknowledged the problem and did decrease the agility of the interceptors. However, that did not solve the situation at all. Though bubbles do slow interceptors to a certain degree, the effect can be easily cancelled out by using Micro-Warp Drives. Until a re-balance is made, the interceptor will continue to be abused as a ship for easy ganks rather than any meaningful PvP.

Bottom line

The change to drone assist can be summed up as taking the sentry fleet doctrine down a notch, yet by no means did it make it worse than the other doctrines currently in use in EVE. However, it did invariably decreased the ability of the Providence Bloc to brawl with larger, more professional power blocs, as it required less individual skill in the past. And while other doctrines, old and new, will be pursued, adapted and practiced, the Providence Bloc’s militia like attitude towards large scale PvP will mean that they will be less effective than in the hands of other power blocs.

Regardless, the staple of Providence, as corebloodbrothers put it, will remain the “Kitchen Sink” fleet, with its bizarre, often mismatched ships and random fittings. And while professional Alliances and Coalitions may look down on it, it is part of the Providence way, much like its political neutrality and tolerance of neutral entities in its sovereign space.

So the next time you fight a Providence fleet and kill a drake, check to see if it has a Salvager in its high slot, it is doctrine after all.

Special thanks to corebloodbrothers for giving me this interview
